I manage about a dozen physical HP servers and I just purchased a 3par 8200 array from them. None of my servers or array were linked to my account, so I was not able to obtain any software relating to them, despite having active support contracts on all of them. It took me 3 months for someone at HP to finally provide me with my SAID and SAR for my 3par so I could manually link the device to my account. Once that was done, I've attempted to manually link my servers to my account. I receive various errors about things not being valid, expired, etc. Still no servers linked to my account.
I have resorted to essentially pirating their firmwares so I can keep my machines up to date. My problem isn't necessarily with the 'You have to have a support contract to download software'; it's with the fact that it's nearly impossible to prove to them that I have valid support contracts! I just don't get it- I buy the servers from you, I buy the support from you, why don't you know that I have this stuff? Why make it so difficult to add this stuff to my account? Part of the difference there is HPE is pushing hard to move sales into the channel (Resellers/Distributors) for all but the top tier of customers. Meanwhile Dell will totally steal deals from their Resellers and take them direct if it helps them close the deal. When going through a Reseller, all the tracking of purchases and who bought what, like wants to happen, suddenly becomes infinitely harder. Its not an excuse, just an explanation. And take it from someone who works there, we hate the Entitlement issue as much as any of you do. One of my co-workers emailed our whole team just last night because even he couldn't figure out how to download the new SPP. I feel your pain, and understand that you weren't making excuses.
These are my suggestions: If you're going to make getting software and firmware updates contingent on having a current support contract, make damn sure that users who DO have that contract can register it and have the system grant the entitlements that should come along with it. If my VAR was supposed to register my carepacks and tie them to my customer account, but skipped that responsibility, then I want to know so I can raise hell with my VAR and maybe switch VARs. If there's a process that I need to make sure I do to tie the servers and support contracts that I purchase to my account, regardless of if I bought HPE direct or from one of the hundreds of VARs, I'm willing to jump through the hoops to make it happen. Just make sure that the process is well documented, with the documents easily accessible and displayed as the top result for any query regarding entitlements. Make sure the documentation is ACCURATE and that the process ACTUALLY WORKS.
If having HP SIM or whatever it's been rebranded to this week will make my life infinitely easier, give me an OVA or VMKD or DVD image or something that will let me get the bare bones of SIM that I need to enter manually or run a scan my networks to create a list of my servers, register them, put them into entitlements, or whatever, so I can download software. I've been in this game a LONG time. I've dealt with vendors that made things very easy, and vendors that have made things very difficult. What it really comes down to is, regardless of how much work I have to put in on my end, if the things that are out of my control don't work, I'm going to be angry.
